On March 1, Hezbollah broke the 2024 truce by launching an offensive on northern Israel; the Israeli counter-offensive struck Southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and the southern suburbs of Beirut. In April 2026, a ceasefire was proclaimed, but only on paper: the violence and bombings in Lebanon have not ceased.

It is in this context; a country already prostrated by years of economic crisis, now once again under bombardment; that Josette, a psychologist, and Ralph, an educator, continue their work every day at the Pro Terra Sancta Shelter in Beirut. We asked them what it means to be born and raised in a context of crisis and what pushed them to work in the humanitarian field.

How has Lebanon changed over time?

Ralph: Lebanon has changed in ways that are both visible and profound. People used to be generally more at ease, more open, more optimistic about the future. Today, it feels as though something impalpable has shifted in the air: there is a weight that wasn’t there before. Yet, what has remained constant is the resilience of the Lebanese people. Despite everything, there is still a silent but tenacious hope for better days.

How does today’s crisis differ from those of the past?

Ralph: What distinguishes the current crisis is how deeply it affects daily life. It is not limited to moments of conflict: it is continuous. I remember my grandmother’s stories about the war. Despite the danger, a sense of normalcy still existed: people managed to meet basic needs, maintain social ties, and support one another. Today, the crisis is more complex and prolonged. It affects not only security but dignity, stability, and daily survival. Even the nature of fear itself has changed.

Josette: People can no longer endure further traumatic experiences. They have lost the ability to resist and adapt, and they are already emotionally, physically, and financially exhausted. In addition, the majority of the population has lost their jobs or survives on minimum wages, often forced to work two or three jobs a day.

Psychosocial activities, Beirut

What is your personal story? Why did you choose to work for Pro Terra Sancta and, more generally, what pushed you to work for an NGO?

Josette: Before 2019, I led a stable, happy, and fulfilling life. I was married and expecting a baby. Then, after 2019, I lost my husband and my family. I went through a very difficult divorce for three years, in the midst of all the challenges Lebanon was facing on every front. I was a single mother raising my daughter practically alone. Two years ago, I also lost my father. Today I am stronger, more resilient, and ready to pursue my dreams despite the chaos that still reigns around me.

Her story is not an isolated case. Prolonged conflict and economic instability have overwhelmed many couples, pushing them toward separation. Josette sees this every day in her work and has experienced it firsthand. In the Beirut Shelter, however, she managed to find a family again.

Josette: I am proud to say that Pro Terra Sancta is like a family to me; it is my second family. I am deeply grateful to all the staff with whom I have built a deep bond over the years, and I am honored to be part of such a respectful, professional, and supportive team. I love working with people; children, adolescents, the elderly, with those who suffer and need someone to help, support, guide, and accompany them toward healing. After all, I too have experienced moments of great pain: I have known trauma, loss, and grief. These are experiences that shaped me and that today allow me to be close to those in need.

For Ralph, however, working in cooperation came almost as a revelation:

Ralph: In October 2012, after being ill for a week, I decided to return to school even though I hadn’t yet recovered. That afternoon, a political assassination caused a violent explosion in my neighborhood: the car was parked right under my balcony. Being at school that day saved my life.

What stuck with him, beyond the shock, was what happened next: he saw people unite, volunteers rebuilding homes, helping families, and restoring dignity amidst the destruction. Exactly nine years later, on that same date, he came across the Pro Terra Sancta Shelter in Beirut.

Ralph: I remember seeing a child run toward me and jump into my arms, genuinely happy to see me. In that moment, despite everything he had lost, his home, some family members, there was still room for trust and joy. Moments like these give meaning to my work.

Working with those who have experienced the trauma of war means daily exposure to stories of loss and pain. Josette and Ralph both describe the difficulty of this balance: between caring for others and managing their own emotional weight.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work and, conversely, what is the greatest difficulty?

Josette: For me, the most rewarding thing is the ability to touch the hearts and minds of so many people in need and in pain, who have no one to support them or even just listen to them. It is the care and attention offered that makes the difference. It is the only way to alleviate suffering that others often do not see. The most difficult aspect, however, is being present for others even when carrying something heavy inside. Setting aside one’s own emotional pain to be able to help those who, in turn, are facing the weight of trauma.

What does it mean to work closely with those who have suffered the trauma of war?

Ralph: Being continuously exposed to stories of loss and suffering can be devastating. Sometimes you carry that emotional weight with you even after the workday ends. Constant self-awareness is necessary, because in this field, it is easy to become the only person you forget to take care of.

Psychosocial work in crisis contexts requires sensitivity, patience, and a deep sense of responsibility. It means knowing how to listen and how to be present, sometimes simply without speaking. It means creating safe spaces where people feel seen and respected, without being forced to tell their stories before they are ready.

Josette: People who have lived through the trauma of war can suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, and much more. They are fragile and vulnerable people, ready to cling to every small glimmer of hope offered to them. They need continuous help, support, and a guide to accompany them in overcoming trauma, grief, and loss.

Josette with Beirut’s children

The children of Beirut: when trauma has no words

Among the most vulnerable people in a conflict context are the children, those who are born and grow up without ever having known peace.

How do children respond to the trauma of war?

Ralph: Some children withdraw into themselves, others express it through hyperactivity or sudden emotional reactions. A child’s response to trauma is like a story written without words: expressed through actions, silences, and emotions that must be understood with care, without rushing to interpret.

Josette: Traumatized children can show signs of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), depression, anxiety, aggressive behavior, a decline in school performance, and sleep disorders. For this very reason, education in a crisis context must go far beyond teaching.

What are the fundamental educational activities for children with these types of needs?

Ralph: Activities that encourage emotional expression, such as art, theater, and storytelling, are essential. Equally important are structure, routine, and opportunities for social interaction. These elements help children rebuild trust, rediscover a sense of normalcy, and develop resilience. In this sense, education becomes not only a path toward learning but a space for healing and this need does not only concern children.

Josette: Psychosocial support provides children with the tools and space to process their experiences in a safe and structured environment. It helps them express emotions, rebuild a sense of routine, and rediscover a sense of stability. In crisis contexts, it becomes a bridge between survival and recovery.

One step at a time

Josette and Ralph are people who carry the same wounds as those they help, and who have chosen, nonetheless, to stay. Their testimony reminds us that in the midst of destruction, there is still space for trust, for listening, and for healing. It is not a rapid process, nor a linear one. But it is possible.

And perhaps this is the most important message coming from Beirut: that rebuilding a sense of security, even after decades of war, is possible; one step at a time, together.

Two Pro Terra Sancta operators in Beirut tell us what it means to live in conflict and to carry, within themselves, the same wounds as those they help.
