Recently he was in the <strong>Holy Land<\/strong> to draw new routes between <strong>Jericho, Bethany and Jerusalem<\/strong> for the new project of the Association pro Terra Sancta: <em>Welcoming Bethany<\/em>. The goal was to create some <strong>paths<\/strong> that enhance the territory around the <strong>city of Lazarus<\/strong>, visiting places often cut off from the main tourist circuits and itineraries and meeting the local community.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to offer development and support to the entire <strong>territory<\/strong>, that has experienced strong <strong>social hardships<\/strong> in the last years. The city of Bethany does not offer any <strong>hiking<\/strong> or marked <strong>itineraries<\/strong>, therefore Pietro had to travel around the area to discover new viewpoints and <strong>draw new paths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/?attachment_id=104117\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-104117\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-104117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572-240x180.jpg\" alt=\"holy land\" width=\"403\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572-480x360.jpg 480w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2572.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But how do you trace a path? &#8220;First you look for it \u2013 Pietro told us \u2013 and then you have to <strong>try<\/strong> it, to <strong>check<\/strong> the feasibility, the potential risks and the levels of difficulty. The itinerary is created based on the <strong>attractiveness<\/strong> and differs according to the types of visitors\u201d. For two weeks Pietro has walked through paths in the <strong>desert<\/strong> or along the <strong>hills<\/strong>, through <strong>Bedouin villages<\/strong>, settlements and cities. He also visited monasteries and <em>wadis<\/em>, immerged in olive tree groves and ancient ruins. He was guided by <strong>Iyad Njoum<\/strong>, a Bedouin boy who works for the Mosaic Center Jericho.<\/p>\n<p>In Pietro\u2019s opinion it is fundamental to go through places on foot: \u201cYou can <strong>look, smell, eat<\/strong> and <strong>listen<\/strong> to what you have around; otherwise it is like traveling blindfolded. When you walk, you tie yourself to the territory, you are at the same level as people, you can talk, you always have a direct contact or an encounter. When you are walking there is always something unexpected happening, and <strong>adventure<\/strong> is part of the journey!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As it happened to Pietro in the desert: \u201cOne day the wheel broke and we got lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/?attachment_id=104118\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-104118\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938-240x180.jpg\" alt=\"holy land\" width=\"368\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938-480x360.jpg 480w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1938.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a>at night in the dark desert. Yet I was not too worried because desert is already a journey into another dimension, an <strong>ascetic journey<\/strong>, in the desert you are in a state of perfection. Now I understand the <strong>hermits<\/strong> and the <strong>prophets<\/strong> who retired themeselves in the Desert!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the objectives of the project is to make the <strong>local community<\/strong> aware of its naturalistic and cultural <strong>heritage<\/strong> and to promote it through local institutions and operators. As Pietro explained: &#8220;the guides must make the visitors feel at home, to convince them that it\u2019s worth coming back, especially here in the Holy Land&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion Pietro added: \u201cIn Italy I walk thorugh the Via Francigena, the great road that brought pilgrims from all over Europe to the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. But walking here is different, we are at the origins of our Faith.
