She told us when she welcomed us, clasping our hand with both hands, and bowing slightly; and she repeated it as she led us to her <strong>brand new white balcony<\/strong>, to show us the <strong>rubble<\/strong> all around and on the sides of the street under her apartment. When the city was still occupied, that street was the border between <strong>West Aleppo<\/strong>, that was occupied by the government, and <strong>East Aleppo<\/strong>, the <strong>red zone<\/strong> controlled by <strong>rebels<\/strong> and Al-Nusra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe bombs in those days fell like hail &#8230; and there, right there, the <strong>ISIS snipers<\/strong> where hiding\u201d she said pointing at the remains of other balconies next to hers, and some holes where once there were glass doors and windows: \u201cthey were our neighbors\u201d. For this reason Mrs. Mayada left her house and went to live with some relatives in the west side of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/it\/una-casa-per-aleppo\/img_0508\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-103584\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-240x180.jpg\" alt=\"casa aleppo\" class=\"wp-image-103584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508-480x360.jpg 480w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0508.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in December, the city was freed and people started talking about <strong>reconstruction<\/strong>, rebirth. Thanks to the help of the <strong>Franciscans<\/strong>, with the support of <strong>Association pro Terra Sancta<\/strong>, they began to rebuild some apartments where possible. Mayada&#8217;s home was one of the first to be<strong> restored.<\/strong> And while the specter of war is still widespread all around, her <strong>white apartment<\/strong> in the ocean of rubble truly is a \u201cstroke of God\u201d, in the middle of destruction and despair. The data we have confirm it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/it\/una-casa-per-aleppo\/img_0502\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-103588\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0502-e1508498180195-240x320.jpg\" alt=\"casa aleppo macerie\" class=\"wp-image-103588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0502-e1508498180195-240x320.jpg 240w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0502-e1508498180195-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0502-e1508498180195-480x640.jpg 480w, https:\/\/preprod.proterrasancta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0502-e1508498180195.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Of about<strong> four million<\/strong> people in <strong>Aleppo<\/strong>, three left the city during the conflict and only have started to come back only recently.&nbsp; Among those who reamined there were mostly women, the elderly and the children. Many men lost their lives in combat, and many still fight in <strong>Assad<\/strong>&#8216;s army. Like Hussam, the son of Mayada, who is still fighting in the army. In addition, there is <strong>85% of unemployment<\/strong> rate and <strong>95%<\/strong> of households live <strong>below the poverty line<\/strong> and many of them still do not have a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the Franciscans, assisted by the Association pro Terra Sancta and the many friends and supporters, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>have really done a lo<\/strong><strong>t<\/strong><\/span>. Yet, of the <strong>900 housing<\/strong> reconstruction <strong>requests<\/strong>, only&nbsp;<strong>10% was accomplished<\/strong> through the activities of the friars and with the support of various friends and supporters.The price for the reconstruction of an apartment varies from 2,000 to 3,000 euros, therefore there is much that still needs to be done. For this reason, together with Mayada, her daughter and the community gathered around the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land<\/strong><\/span>, we strongly urge you to join the campaign &#8220;New Homes for Aleppo&#8221; to help with a small offer to bring a small &#8220;stroke of hope&#8221; to the <strong>families<\/strong> in Aleppo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThis new house is a stroke of God to my life.\u201d Mrs. Mayada kept on repeating it while she showed us her house.
